From Hoops to Finance

Fred Perry grew up in East Orange, New Jersey, on courts where reputations were earned rather than given. At East Orange High School he became a standout — a guard with a competitor’s instincts and a work ethic that showed up long before the gym lights did. It was enough to make college recruiters take notice, and enough to open a door that would eventually lead him a thousand miles from home.

The call came from legendary coach Brian Heaney, who was building something formidable at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fred took it. In the 1970s he crossed the border to a city he had never seen, joined the Huskies, and set the course for the rest of his life — a decision made in a single conversation and repaid over the following five decades.

Winning at the national level with the Saint Mary’s Huskies meant accountability to twelve other men every single day — practice standards, travel, film, and the kind of trust that only gets built when something real is on the line. Those years taught him what a team owes each other, a lesson that never left him.

After an outstanding career at Saint Mary’s, Fred earned a tryout with the New Orleans Jazz — the franchise now known as the Utah Jazz. Standing on an NBA floor is something only a handful of players on earth ever do, and he arrived there on merit: years of early mornings, hard practices, and a refusal to be outworked. It remains one of the clearest measures of the level he reached.

When the playing days ended, the habits stayed. Fred carried the same discipline, competitiveness, and instinct for teamwork into a new career, working across several financial industries throughout the United States and Canada before settling back in Halifax from the 1980s onward. It is where he has built his life’s work ever since.

Even while building his career in finance, Fred never strayed far from the game that shaped him. Over the years he has coached at every level, mentoring young athletes across Nova Scotia.
